What a cool benchmark to find. Found while in the area caching and working. I'm glad they are trying to preserve this one.

CodeMission, CoolZX11, GirlinFilm, our geopooch, and I were all out for what we'd hoped would be a BIG cache run. It wound up being a smaller cache run, but we also had it double as a fieldtrip for our homeschooled kids!! Getting to see this stone and read up on the history of it fit right in with our American History lessons -- even right down to the time period that it was placed!!

This was one of our great delights of our 7,700 mile trip from Portland, OR to Port Jervis, NY via the southern route of I-10 from San Diego to Daytona Beach. We had researched the site, using as our primary reference C. Walter White's "Initial Points of the Rectangular Survey System.
The site was readily accessible from I-10 with just a short detour north on Rte 43. We had been reassured by a "local" that the area was open to the public, despite the implication in the NGS description that it is private property. A local sign at the site states that the area was incorporated as a public park in 1917.

The area is well preserved and secure memorials have been erected by local historical and survey buffs. In spite of repeated incidents of vandalism (which I will *NEVER* understand), the monument itself remains intact and the area a testament to those intrepid surveyors of yesteryear as well as to the efforts of our generation of devoted and industrious surveyors who cherish our heritage. I salute you all! . . . . patrick & shirley

Found the disk in the top of the Ellicot Stone. In good condition, could not get close enough for a close-up photo due to the protective fence. The corner is now protected by a gazebo.

We were coming back from doing a couple of caches and saw a historical marker on the side of US 43, decided to stop and take a look. Had to hike about 1000 feet back into the woods and over some railroad tracks to find it. One of the original stones marking the boundy between the USA and Spanish held Florida.

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in December 1992.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
