Unfortunately very disrespectful teenagers and drinkers have vandalized this area to just disgusting proportions! Also while I was attempting to take a picture of the hole where the brass marker should have been I was attacked by an infestation of winged ants - be careful !!

We found three benchmarks on Initial Point. The first one has been vandalized to the point that the reference number is no longer really legible, but may say no 4. The second had been destroyed, only leaving a hole and stem where it had been. The third was in good condition and clearly marked no 3. Please take a look at the photos.

Reference.
Reference Mark 2 found vandalized also.
Reference Mark 1 not found but a new Reference Mark 4 appears to have been placed in 1990 based on the disk stamping.

AS DESCRIBED THIS ONE IS IN VERY POOR CONDITION.
THE STEM STILL REMAIS SO THE MARK TO ME IS CONSIDERED POOR.
IT CAN BE RESET EASILY BY THE EVIDENCE FOUND.
THE ACCURACY MAY BE LOWERED BUT THAT IS NORMAL.

A PART OF OUR 6000 MILE TREK ACROSS THE GOOD OLE USA.

SORRY TO SEE SUCH VANDALISM.

Mark Destroyed 4/13/2004 CallawayMT marked OH1335 (NGS Benchmark) as destroyed   Visit Log
The initial point marker has been stolen out of its setting in the concrete platform. The position is well established by the hole in the concrete and verified by the two RM's set in 1979. The NGS description is incorrect on RM 1, it is marked RM 4. RM 2 has been ripped out of its setting, but is still well marked by the stem which is still in the boulder. The road is paved all the way to the Initial point road and then is gravel for the final 1 mile to the base of the hill. Don't try driving up the hill without a good clearance vehicle.
It would be nice if this monument was restored by the Idaho Land Surveyors Association, but unless they can make it bomb proof, it probably would not last long. There used to be a plaque on the face of the concrete platform which has also been ripped out by vandals.
This is a truly superior exhibition of vandalism at its finest, what a shame.

Looks like some of the previous folks confused this *intact* marker with the actual Initial Point that it references. Marker is in fine shape, which is hard to believe. Heck, as long as you're vandalizing ONE benchmark, why not hit the one 5 yards away?

Hmmm, My Second BM in one day. Did better with these today than with caches. LOL
Drove right up to Initial Point with my GAV GeoCache Assault Vehicle (the last little hill getting rocky)!!! Checked out the sight, Crawled around the rocks, oh yeah a cache is nearby.?. Ahh, ExArmyCpt beat me too it! Was having to much fun and almost forgot about the cache... Remembered the cache, now forgot to take a picture of the BM!!! Forgot to show ExArmyCpt, the disc is still there (Not in concret step, its in rock over railing)... Phewww, what a day it was!

Found this today with Stryker-6. As noted in the other logs, the disc is missing, just a star or sun painted where it used to be and some other graffiti around the concrete slab. Also found a geocache in the vacinity.
