What a historically interesting place for an old Forester with an ancient surveying background. I always knew of the initial points existence, but never knew the darn thing was so easy to get to & visit. Not quite like the hallowed grounds of the battlefields at Gettysburg, but a close second! My poor planning kept this from being my first benchmark since starting to geocache, so the W.M. I.P. goes into my log as #2.

Just adding another reminder that the original benchmark has been vandalized and removed. This is a wonderfully significant location but for logging purposes a Note, DNF or Destroyed log would be appropriate here instead of a Found It.

There is no doubt in my mind that the current benchmark is in the correct spot but the USGS database does not reflect this change. Typically, when a benchmark was replaced by an new benchmark disk that new disk was stamped "reset" and is given a new PID. Sometimes, as in this case, a new marker is given a new designation. In this case, the current benchmark might get it's own page in the future but for now it is not the marker described on this page.

Mark Destroyed 10/27/2006 Papa-Bear-NYC marked RD3152 (NGS Benchmark) as destroyed   Visit Log
This station is in a lovely park called "Willamette Stone State Park". If you drive west on Burnside and keep driving after it becomes Skyline Boulevard, look for the sign and a small parking lot on the left as you reach the top of the ridge. There is a short paved path down the hill about 200 yards to the monument.

The station was originally established in 1851 and marked the initial point for land surveying in Washington and Oregon. The "Willamette Base Line" goes due west to the Pacific Ocian and due east to the Idaho state line. In Portland it follows Stark east out of the city and then follows Base Line Road as you get further out. The Perpendicular "Willamette Meridian" goes due north to the Canadian border, and due south to the California state line.

Unfortunately, in the 1980s the stone was vandalized and there is no record in the NGS datasheet that the horizontal control was preserved when the present disk and concrete base was put in to replace the stone. There is block of granite that the disk is mounted on, but there is no record that this is a remnant of the original stone (which was 8 inches square).

So as a benchmark (horizontal control station) it is destroyed, but as a place to visit, it is just wonderful. If you are in Portland, this is a must (besides visiting the nearby caches).

Girlfriend, a soon to be geocacher as soon as I give her my Garmin GPS, told me about this benchmark on the drive up from Reno for the Great American Pig Out Day, i.e., Thanksgiving. Took us a while to find it as we didn't have coordinates but happen to drive by a state park on a ridge line and found it.

Interesting place for the bench bench mark. Wonder why this exact location versus up higher on the ridge, etc.

A light rain was falling (no surprise there) so location shots did not work. Did notice some surveying tape off in the SE direction, maybe 15-20 yards, and think I saw a rod in the ground but did not document.

Unfortunately the very near by cache didn't show up on my searches (only easy caches as I was road tripping and didn't have that much time). Will be back though.

I agree with CallawayMT, that a nice job has been done by the local survey society with the plaque and the 1988 Initial Point disk.

Went to Portland for the Jeld-Wen Champions Tour Golf tournament, but had to take the time to come see the Willamette Stone. Did not take a data sheet and drove right past the parking area the first time.

Walked down the trail in some morning fog and found the 1988 Stainless monument drilled into the remnants of the original stone. A very nicely presented area with a large brass placque and informational exhibits up at the road parking area.

Well worth the stop to see such an important survey monument for the states of Oregon and Washington. Just a small glimpse of the terrain and vegetative conditions those surveyors went through over 100 years ago.

The described benchmark was apparently vandalized in the 1980s and replaced with a marker by the Parks Dept. What a significant historical location! Reception was marginal under the trees, so my coordinates are not of especially high accuracy.

Possibly the most important benchmark in our area!
I think Maps-R-Us should be the first to log this one as a find

Found this about a year ago as part of the great Carto Cache -Oregon History Lesson #5 by the Maps-R-Us Team. A wonderful introduction to the historical aspects of bench marking. This is a truly moving experience to stand at the intersection of the base line and ist meridian for all of Washington and Oregon. Thanks to the team for an inspiration. . . . patrick & shirley
