On Thursday the 14th, Pierre and I met up with Kurt and went after some trailless peaks. These are called bush whacks and they may mean a walk through the woods, or they be be treks trrough impenatrable thickets and bogs. Todays climbs were somewhere in between. Our goal were "The Smarts" - two peaks a few miles on the US side of the border accessible from Baudrey Road, a logging road off of route 27 about 20 miles north of Stratton (see QH0260, "LAYTON IBC"). Then in the afternoon we split up and I went after two marks on Kibby Mountain.

Kibby Mountain is reached via an old jeep road (the "Firewarden's trail") from a side road off of Baudrey Road, about 20 miles north of Stratton off of Route 27. There is a fire tower on top which is currently about 20 feet high with an observation platform.

I was looking for two stations on Kibby Mountain, this one, and one set in 1915 by the IBC (see QH0255, "KIBBY IBC") which I did not find. Ironically this station was placed because they couldn't find the IBC station. Then in 1941 the IBC found both, just over two feet apart under the observation tower.

The station was immediately spotted under the tower but unfortunately only the stem remained. But the outline of the disk and the integrity of the stem would likely make this station usable. I would characterize it as "Found, poor condition".

I also found RM2's drill hole (no disk) exactly as the measurements put it. The hole is unmistakable. Interestingly, in 1941 the IBC found RM2 loose and asked the fire warden to cement it back in place. Maybe he never did!

The position of this drill hole also serves to verify that the station mark stem I found is indeed the station. In addition, the exact correspondence of the measurements from this station to KIBBY IBC (although that station was not found, see QH0255 "KIBBY IBC"), with the exact center of the tower base further corroberates the identity of this station.

I found no sign of RM1.

Documented History (by the NGS)

1/1/1928 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1928 (CAS) STATION IS UNDER THE LOOKOUT TOWER ON THE HIGHEST PART OF KIBBY MOUNTAIN. STATION AND REFERENCE MARKS ARE STANDARD BRONZE DISKS WEDGED IN DRILL HOLES IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK. THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN IS BARE, BUT SCRUB BRUSH AND SPRUCE IS GROWING JUST A FEW FEET BELOW THE SUMMIT. THERE IS A SMALL CABIN ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN, ABOUT 75 YARDS N OF THE STATION. THERE IS NO OLD STATION MARK UNDER THE TOWER. THE REMAINS OF AN OLD TOWER THAT HAS BLOWN DOWN ARE TO THE E OF THE STATION. A STATION MARK MIGHT HAVE BEEN UNDER THAT TOWER, BUT IT COULD NOT BE FOUND. TO REACH FROM JACKMAN, TAKE THE TRAIN TO SKINNER, MAINE. FROM SKINNER TAKE THE TRAIL TO THE KIBBY MOUNTAIN LOOKOUT. IT IS A WELL MARKED TRAIL ALL THE WAY ALONG A TELEPHONE LINE. IT IS ABOUT 10 MILES FROM SKINNER TO THE LOOKOUT CAMP AND ABOUT A MILE FROM THE CAMP TO THE STATION. A TEAM AND WAGON CAN BE TAKEN AS FAR AS THE CAMP. ABOUT 5 MILES FROM SKINNER A TRAIL TURNS TO THE LEFT GOING TO TUMBLEDOWN MOUNTAIN. OTHER TRAILS BRANCH OFF AT INTERVALS, BUT THE ONE TO FOLLOW AT ALL TIMES IS THE ONE ALONG THE TELEPHONE LINE. STATION MAY ALSO BE REACHED FROM MEGANTIC BY TAKING THE TRAIN TO SKINNER, ABOUT 20 MILES DISTANT. HEIGHT OF SIGNAL ABOVE STATION MARK - 1.18 METERS.
1/1/1941 by IBC (SEE DESCRIPTION)
RECOVERY NOTE BY INTERNATIONAL BOUNDARY COMMISSION 1941 (JH) STATION FOUND AS DESCRIBED. REFERENCE MARK 2 WAS FOUND LOOSE AND ARRANGEMENTS WERE MADE TO HAVE FIRE WARDEN CEMENT IT IN THE DRILL HOLE WITH THE ARROW POINTING TOWARD THE CENTER MARK. THE INTERNATIONAL BOUNDARY COMMISSION TRIANGULATION STATION KIBBY 1915 WAS RECOVERED AND FOUND UNDER THE EXACT CENTER OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER MARKED BY A 2-INCH BRONZE DISK. THIS MARK WAS FOUND COVERED WITH AN INCH OF DIRT. IN 1915, THERE WAS A 50-FOOT STEEL TOWER ON KIBBY MOUNTAIN. IN 1925, A SEVERE SLEET AND WIND STORM BENT THE UPPER PART OF THE TOWER DOWN TO THE GROUND. REPAIRS WERE MADE BY RESTORING THE LOWER 15 FEET OF THE STEEL TOWER TO GOOD CONDITION AND ERECTING A LOOKOUT HOUSE THEREON. THE TOWER IS ON ITS ORIGINAL FOUNDATION. THE UPPER PORTION OF THE TOWER IS ON THE GROUND E OF THE STATION. THE 1928 DESCRIPTION OF KIBBY REFERS TO THIS AS THE REMAINS OF AN OLD TOWER.
