Found in poor condition. Over the Columbus weekend I headed up to northern New Hampshire for some hiking, benchmarking and a bit of sight seeing. All the recovered marks (and all but one of the Not Founds) were boundary markers of one sort or another. Some were state boundary markers, some were US-Canada boundary markers and some were IBC triangulation stations (used when the US-Canada border was surveyed in 1915-1916). Here's a trip report: (visit link) And here's a set of photo albums: (visit link) This station is one of the standard cast iron boundary monuments which stand about 3 feet high above a concrete base. This monument was broken off about 4 inches above the base and the post was lying nearby on the ground. The area was the low point between Salmon and Trumbull peaks and the vista on either side was quite steep. The terrain on either side of the saddle was a very wet bog. This would indicate that ATVs could not drive here, but perhaps snowmobiles could. It was possibly a case of vandalism, or perhaps it was inadvertantly struck by a snowmobile. Logged with the NGS as "Recovered, poor condition" with appropriate description on 10/12/2006
