I spent a productive 4 day weekend in Northern New Hampshire and Vermont in late September. From Friday noon till Monday noon. The weather on Friday and Monday was great, but Saturday and Sunday were rainy. But luckily we escaped the worst of the rain which came late in the day for both Saturday and Sunday. The targets were all boundary monuments and related marks: Boundary Monuments, Reference Monuments and Triangulations stations used in the boundary survey done from 1914-1919. The Reference Monuments were not in the NGS database, so I include them as "extra credit" stations logged with the nearest NGS station. On Sunday we worked at the far end of East Inlet Road in Pittsburg. We passed by Monument 475 (near the northernmost point of NH), and 476 to get to this mark. This station is a triangulation station, but unlike the 3 out of 3 of these which I found on Friday the 25th, this was one of the 3 subsequent DNFs that we logged on Saturday and Sunday. I guess as in baseball, some days you just have it and some days you just don't. I had passed over this peak in 2006 and made a cursory look for the triangulation station, but I looked right along the border. Only afterwards did I realizes from reading the description (duh!) that it was about 40 feet off the line, on the US side. So this time I came armed with GPS, metal detector, tape measure and all manner of digging tools. I managed to uncover line marker 476-21 plus a Terres & Forets Quebec triangulation station (for which I had no coordinates), but still had no luck. Next time (there's always an "next time" when you have a DNF) I'll find those Quebec coordinates and come with 2 tapes to track this sucker down. Below are photos of the 2 disks on the line, plus 3 likely sites in the brush.
