Didn 10/6/2006 Papa-Bear-NYC couldn't find QH0524 (NGS Benchmark)   Visit Log
The mark was not Found.

Over the Columbus weekend I headed up to northern New Hampshire for some hiking, benchmarking and a bit of sight seeing. All the recovered marks (and all but one of the Not Founds) were boundary markers of one sort or another. Some were state boundary markers, some were US-Canada boundary markers and some were IBC triangulation stations (used when the US-Canada border was surveyed in 1915-1916).

Here's a trip report: (visit link)
And here's a set of photo albums: (visit link)

This mark was an IBC triangulation station disk set on outcropping bedrock about 80 feet northwest of the boundary at the top of the west peak of Prospect Hill. This is about 2 miles along the boundary from the Route 3 customs station in Pittsburg, NH. The area off the vista was heavily vegetated and although several promising rock ledges were found, the mark was not found after about 30 minutes of searching.

After getting home, I calculated the distance and azimuth from the nearest line marker on the vista (No. 484-54) and got the following values:

Azimuth 328:04:25.73 true (about 345 degrees magnetic)
Distance 23.8461 meters (78.24 feet)

You might have more success than I if you use these values to search for the station.

On the way to this station, I recovered IBC triangualtion station PROS (which I had first recovered in August). I have included picture of that station, which is about 90 feet off the vista but which was easier to find.

Note: you should check with the customs people when you hike along the vista. Make sure they know you are going past 4th Connecticut Lake or they will be concerned when you don't return in an hour or two, which is normal for visitors to that point. BTW - I reccommend you drop in and check out 4th Lake - it's quite lovely.

The famous "double monument" at the Pittsburg customs station. The hike along the boundary vista starts at this point.

Line marker 484-54. This is the closest marker on the boundary line to SPECT, which is 78.24 feet northwest of this marker off of the vista on the US side.

The general area where the station was located. The rock in the view looked promising, but after scraping much of the vegetation off, no mark was found.

This is IBC triangulation station PROS, which is on the east peak of Prospect Hill, about 1/2 mile from this station. I had recovered it in August and found it again today on the way to this station. It is also about 70 feet off the vista, but was somehow much easier to find.
