Found in good condition. Over the Columbus weekend I headed up to northern New Hampshire for some hiking, benchmarking and a bit of sight seeing. All the recovered marks (and all but one of the Not Founds) were boundary markers of one sort or another. Some were state boundary markers, some were US-Canada boundary markers and some were IBC triangulation stations (used when the US-Canada border was surveyed in 1915-1916). Here's a trip report: (visit link) And here's a set of photo albums: (visit link) This particular monument is a New Hampshire/Vermont boundary marker. The boundary goes along the west bank of the Connecticut River, but the monuments are up on the Vermont side to provide a firm footing, so thet are all called "Reference Monuments" and the distance and direction to the boundary is stamped on each one. This one has a witness sign visible from the road and it's on a steep embankment, partially covered by dirt and grass. I recovered another nearby monument, No. 84, which is not in the NGS database, and I've included a picture of it here. The topographic maps show all these monuments. Logged with the NGS as "Recovered in good condition" on 10/12/2006. I was back in the are in October 2007 and I bagged another one about 20 miles south (also non-NGS). It's marker no. 73, and it's in a very pretty spot on the west side of the Columbia covered bridge. [This entry was edited by Papa-Bear-NYC on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at 6:29:08 AM.]
