Found it 10/5/2006 Papa-Bear-NYC found QH0736 (NGS Benchmark)   Visit Log
Found in good condition.

Over the Columbus weekend I headed up to northern New Hampshire for some hiking, benchmarking and a bit of sight seeing. All the recovered marks (and all but one of the Not Founds) were boundary markers of one sort or another. Some were state boundary markers, some were US-Canada boundary markers and some were IBC triangulation stations (used when the US-Canada border was surveyed in 1915-1916).

And here's a set of photo albums: (visit link)

This particular monument is a New Hampshire/Vermont boundary marker. The boundary goes along the west bank of the Connecticut River, but the monuments are up on the Vermont side to provide a firm footing, so thet are all called "Reference Monuments" and the distance and direction to the boundary is stamped on each one. This one is at the corner of the road coming over the bridge with the main cross road and can easily be spotted as you drive by.

Logged with the NGS as "Recovered in good condition" on 10/12/2006.

I have included photos of the last three boundary reference monuments (non-NGS) which lie up route 102. The first is on the south side of the bridge over Halls Stream and the last two are a mile or two up route 102 where the road crosses into NH. They mark the northeast point of Vermont, and the last one is on a rock in the river at the shore. I recovered them on Oct. 19, 2007.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in August 1994.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
