It's not going to fit in your pocket, but the 3G iPad definitely has the benefit of a larger screen (good with maps) and a very accurate GPS chip. I've found several caches using just the iPad and it's been spot-on every time.
As others have mentioned, MotionX HD is an awesome app and is primarily what I use for finding the cache, but even the official geocaching app works great (I put it in 2x mode); paperless caching on the iPad!
I got an Otterbox case to protect it while in the woods; it makes the iPad a bit heavier, but it's worth it when I have accidentally dropped it going over a log or something.
