It's not a bad GPS on flat open ground, but if you spend any time under the trees, it will annoy you. It does not take much cover to lose signal. When signal is present it works fine and the controls are not difficult to figure out.

The Garmin Etrex Legend is good basic all around GPS. I bought this one because I could plug it into my computer and send geocache information that way which is much quicker then entering latitude and longitude by hand which is what I was doing with an older Explorist 200. What you pay for a handheld GPS depends on how many bells and whistles you want. This one points me to the cache and I go find it. Don’t use cheap or rechargeable batteries as they won’t last long…spend the extra coupla bucks and buy a good name brand of battery. I have no complaints about this unit I bought it used on Ebay for around $60.00 give or take.

Weird problems initially trying to get coords/pois/waypoints downloaded the first time. Garmin provided a SERIAL cable, but no SW, drivers, or usage documentation. Grrr...found a USB/Serial converter, and muscled it out myself. Never got the Garmin POI loader or the direct GPS download from geocaching to work for it - BUT - GSAK - the Geocaching Swiss Army Knife application - was able to fit the bill and download waypoints to it - nice and smooth, too. If you are struggling with this too, I finally got there by flipping through different COM settings in GSAK until it sensed my GPS. Finally died after 4 1/2 years...don't recall dropping it or anything, just finally got to the point where screen would freeze w/ a one vertical line on it after about 30 seconds or so after turning it on...so sad. Bought a Garmin eTrex 20 to replace it, because it was a good sturdy unit!
