Love my unit. Its 2 years old now, very reliable, except now I cannot use it with my new computer with windows 7. Its not compatible, and Magellan wont replace it, and now I have to buy a new GPS. Not too cool if you ask me. I will not be buying another Magellan that's for sure.

For geocaching the Explorist 500 is hard to beat, and the topo maps are excellent. 90% of finds are within 2 metres of a walk-up "Zero to next", and most of those resolve to 1 metre or less from "Zero to next" by the time the logs are finished. Of the 10% that are greater than 2 metres most are due to tree cover, but anything over 5 metres is often supported by multiple logs of BAD COORDS. When I trust the 500 I usually find a cache pretty quickly, and on a couple of occasions have walked past other brand users "wandering aimlessly" and gone straight to a cache. The 500 is also very easy to use, unlike some brands. At the GC1KAXA WA Caching Birthday Bash - Albany 2009 by tangowithcupcake I saw and heard an "other brand user", while attempting to manually input a waypoint, use very strong language, which didn't seem to help. After more than 3 years heavy use I split the casing, and it still does the job held together with two rubber bands. If I could buy another I would.
