Maine (ME) was admitted to the Union as the 23rd state on March 15, 1820. Nicknamed the "The Pine Tree State," Maine is the 39th largest state by geographic size (at 33,414 sq mi/86,542 sq km) and 40th largest by population. The capital city of Maine is Augusta, the largest city is Portland, and the highest point is Mount Katahdin at 5,268 ft/1,606 m.
