North Carolina (NC) was admitted to the Union as the 12th state on November 21, 1789. Nicknamed the "The Tar Heel State," North Carolina is the 28th largest state by geographic size (at 53,865 sq mi/139,509 sq km) and 10th largest by population. The capital city of North Carolina is Raleigh, the largest city is Charlotte, and the highest point is Mount Mitchell at 6,684 ft/2,038 m.

The three most recently published waymarks include Blackmon Amphitheater - Mt Airy, NC, South Meridian Marker, Nash County, North Carolina and Laurel Mill (circa 1850) near Louisburg, NC.
