Geocache Description:

This cache is near the end of an abandoned mining road South of Blair Valley in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. I recently found the rock marking the NE corner of the Pilot Mine that RocketMan found, so this must be the Pilot Mine. Parts of it are steep and rocky, but it rewards you with great desert views and a chance to see an old mining shaft. The hike is about three miles round trip.

Park at a large pullout on Highway S2 between the 24 and 25 mile markers. Cross the highway and head South a few dozen feet to the California Riding and Hiking Trail. Take the trail West. At N 33° 01.051, W 116° 25.925 go left/uphill. The junction of the road and the trail is nearly impossible to see. Refer to the hint if you get stuck here. The road is very faint until it starts cutting into the right side of the hill (heading Southwest). There is a prominent rock knob to the left at the top of the hill. The road goes downhill for awhile before getting steep again.

At the top of the second saddle you can see the Box Canyon interpretive panel/parking area below you when you face almost due West.

At N 33° 00.514, W 116° 26.095 you are at the last of the uphill climbing. Follow the road downhill.

The cache is at about 3100 feet.

The container is a white metal tin 8" in diameter and 3" deep. It contains:

  • Memobook, Pen and Pencil
  • www.wheresgeorge.com Dollar Bill
  • 4 AA Batteries
  • Cinnamon Altoids
  • Ballons
  • Junior Slinky
  • Music CD
  • Mexican Coins
  • Rocks and Shell
  • Playdoh
There is a mine shaft about 500' beyond the cache, at the end of the road. You might want to bring a flashlight to look inside of it, but do not go inside of it. The road is very steep between the cache and the shaft.
