I am thrilled to be the first to place a GeoCache in Alaska.
Considering the size of our state that's paramount to being the
first to place a cache west of the Mississippi River. The cache has
been placed in the Alexander Archipelagos on Baranof Island near
the community of Sitka. Since we have only twelve miles of road
that'll limit the driving. Start your quest at the Sawmill Creek
Campground. Cross the footbridge over the creek and your odyssey
commences. This is a level #1 walk of no more than a quarter mile.
Since the only open ground around here is the airport you are in a
dense forested area. Trees over a hundred feet surround you. Your
GPSr may have trouble getting a lock due to the size of the trees
and the effects of the tight canyon. The cache is in 2" diameter
black sewer pipe, about 18" long. Happy hunting.

November 6, 2009 by webscouter. (4244 found) [Let me start out by saying that 100 foot accuracy back here is really good. At least it is better than I was ever able to get. So lets talk about todays adventure. I started out at first light to see if I could find the cache. I had confirmation that I was in fact not in the right location and had a wonderful pen and ink illustration of the cache location provided by the cache owners son. With that in hand I headed back down the trails. Since I had traveled the trails twice yesterday I put away my gps as I went. When I got to the point you have to duck under a log to slide down a short hill I noticed a flash of white from inside a hollow tree. I decided to check it out and found the original cache that was long missing. This was about 300 feet from the river! Must have been a muggle intervention before it was washed downstream. I decided at that point that I had a find reqardless of the success searching for the replacement cache. My two GPS units both started to settle down near the tree I was searching at yesterday but I had been assured that this wasn't the correct tree. Looking around I noticed another tree about 50 feet away that could fit the description of the tree I was looking for. After just a few minutes of looking around I spied the replacement cache tucked away just where I was told it would be. I signed that log while dancing my dance of joy. Only twenty minutes from the time I had parked I had found both Centurion Guards. So for those of you who go looking for this cache let me give a spoiler.] Vs lbh frr gur ovt syng ebbgf gung ybbx yvxr n jnyy whfg gb gur yrsg bs gur genvy tb gb gung gerr. November 5, 2009 by webscouter. (4244 found) Spent three hours here this morning. I'm pretty sure I had the right location and a description of the cache hiding place from the owners son makes me pretty certain I was in the right place. I'm going to try one more time tomorrow morning. Hopefully a new day will bring success.

July 12, 2009 by Mountain_Wanderer (8099 found) So glad to see that this cache is still alive. Despite the fact that it has only been found 6 times it is the oldest cache in Alaska. Since I found it in 2005 I have managed to find the oldest cache in all 50 states and still believe that the older caches are the best. The next time I am in the area ( And I will be back!!) I will go find it again!! I suspect that very few, if anyone, will complete the oldest 50 of the US as I have. It is my premier accomplishment in geocaching. I do not have the most, but I do have the best!!

July 12, 2009 by Baranofisland (1 found) ** Coordinates Changed From ** N 57° 03.632 W 135° 12.719 Distance From Old: 151.7 feet Performed some much-needed cache maintenance. The river had changed course enough to have washed out the old location, so we replaced the cache with a new container not far from where it originally was, but well out of the way of the river. Seeded with some goodies as well. The cache is now clearly visible when you're standing next to it, but getting back to it will require maybe 30-40 feet of bush-whacking. Have fun!
