The falls here contained the fourth Power Station built in New Zealand. Originally conceived in 1882 and planned until 1897 when the land purchase was started, it was commisioned in 1901 after construction started in 1899. The demand for the power required exceeded original expectations and a 2nd alternator was commisioned in 1908 doubling the output to 200kw. The station stayed in service until the end of September 1939. The station building, made of timber, has since rotted away, but larger steel structures are still visible in the river.
The tracks in this area visit lookouts, the trout pools, caves and the original power station site. There are a number of water falls and the whole area is worth a visit. In 1995 one of the original steel turbines was lifted out of the river and is on display near the carpark. There are lots of informative signs in the area.
This cache is a 1.25 litre plastic container painted camoflage style, it's located in vegetation near the carpark within approx 5m of the given co-ordinates.
Adjusted waypoint location slightly 29th December 2001, only about 7m. Not sure why I got a different reading this time, however as weather conditions were much better this time, I will go with the new reading. Also adjusted clue, to make the cache easier to find.
Please do not leave anything of value in view in your car. This location is now known for thefts from cars. If in doubt, don't risk it.
