Geocache Description:

A cache on up-and-down terrain in Newcastle, Maine.

Sheepscot River

The Griggs Preserve is a peaceful wildlife area located in Newcastle, ME, fronting the Sheepscot River. While lacking the views of some other midcoast Maine cache spots, it is a tranquil area for hiking and wildlife viewing. The main trail (white blazes) loops 1.5 miles across this 56-acre parcel of huge pines, stone walls, and woodpecker hideouts. Another ½ mile of trails pass through natural springs and bogs. You'll also see the Central Maine Railroad skirting the river--hence the name of the cache--but please be a safe geocacher and stay away from the tracks.

Directions to the preserve: From Wiscasset, take Route 1 North about 2 miles and take a left at the top of the hill onto Cochran Road (look for Skip Cahill’s Tires). Proceed about one mile and take left onto Trails End Road (marked with a private driveway sign). The winding road leads to the parking lot on your left (before the bridge). Please keep all cars in the parking lot and respect our neighbors.

Cache is 5-cup plastic container with a blue lid, filled with goodies for young and old.

Good luck and have fun!
