Geocache Description:

A rugged hiking adventure on a historic trail in southeastern Jackson County.

A good hikeSteep hillsOvergrowthStream crossingsNo shortsNo water
A moderately long hike (3+ miles) with a few steep hills and a few very minor stream crossings. Long pants suggested due to ticks and a few thorns. You will have to carry in your own water.

Walking this trail is like traveling back in time. It's easy to imagine yourself as one of many troops marching into battle.

This one is not for the meek! It is a good, rugged hike navigating a literal maze of trails. The round-trip length of the hike is just under 3-1/2 miles (varies depending on which combination of trails you follow).

I have given this a 3.5 terrain rating because of: the length of the hike, multiple minor stream crossings (mostly lots of mud), a few mildly steep hills, multiple trail options, some poorly-defined trail sections, thorns, and ticks. But don't let that scare you away, because the payoff is beautiful scenery, an amazing amount of wildlife (I counted around 3 dozen deer among other animals), a trip through almost every natural ecosystem found in this region, a little bit of history, and a feeling of isolation and quiet unmatched in the immediate KC area.

Be sure you have plenty of water and daylight... I ran out of both. :)

The initial trailhead (and the only legal parking available to everyone year-round) is at:

N 38° 54.887'
W 94° 12.284'

(It is also possible to hike to this cache by trails from the Blue and Gray cache.)

Starting from that trailhead, proceed onward to the nearest trailhead for the Lone Jack Civil War Trail, which is at:

N 38° 54.448'
W 94° 12.775'

Unless you really, really want to it is not necessary to go off trail. Following the correct paths from the initial trailhead will take you directly to the Lone Jack Civil War trailhead, and the Lone Jack Civil War Trail (and its branches) will take you to within several meters of the cache location.

The trails in this park are used by Boy Scouts several times a year, so please hide the cache very well when you are finished. Thanks!
