Geocache Description:

A monotony break between Roswell and Vaughn, NM

In 1947, a UFO was reported to have crashed west of the cache location, sparking a debate that continues to this day. It has finally been determined why the UFO crashed.

US 285 between Roswell and Vaughn, NM is one of the most boring pieces of road in this part of the world. Straight, flat and devoid of scenery for 95 miles - unless you like the "wide open spaces".

It is now believed the UFO was flying down US 285 when the pilot dozed off (as do many present day travelers), lost control of the spacecraft and crashed into a hill several miles off to west.

As a public service, we have placed this cache as a Monotony Break for persons traveling between Vaughn and Roswell. It is a micro about the size of film canister, but not one. Bring something small if you want to trade.

The cache is on the east side of the road and there are turn arounds a half mile or so on each side so you can easilly approach the location.

This location is approximately one-half way between Vaughn and Roswell. This will come as bad news to new travelers when they realize they have been driving for what seems hours and still have that much to go. Sorry, welcome to the NM plains!

Without the clue, this may prove to be somewhat difficult. Please try it without decoding first and let us know what you think. We are going to start it at 2.5

Those things with horns in the fields are not aliens - they are antelope. Enjoy your trip.

BRING YOUR OWN PENCIL!!!!

1-29-04 Update. I checked this location on Delorme map software today. It shows an old cavalry trail crossing the highway just north (looks like about .2 miles)of the cache. It is the "Ft. Sumner - Ft. Stanton" trail and apparently connected those forts in the late 1800's.

Aerial USGS photos show a line that could be the trail. I don't know if it can be seen at ground level at all. If you see anything, please note it in your log! It looks to run at right angles to the highway and just south of the tunraround north of the cache.

Who knew there might actually be something historical out here???? I certainly didn't
