Geocache Description:

Explore the remains of the abandoned Central Mass. Railroad in Weston.

This is the third cache that I've placed near the abandoned right of way of the Central Mass. Railroad, the first being Central Mass Railroad. A short history of the Central Mass is discussed there.

While searching for this cache you can explore the truss bridge that once carried the single track Central Mass Railroad over the Fitchburg Railroad in Weston. The bridge was built on a curved section of track. The track was originally banked for high speed operation through the curve. It looks like the rail on the inside of the curve was later raised to eliminate the banking.

You should also be able to find the remains of a telltale just east of the bridge. The wires hanging from the horizontal arm of the telltale would strike any brakemen riding the tops of freight cars to let them know that they should duck because of the low clearance of the top of the bridge.

Park by the Weston train station on Church Street at N 42° 22.290 W 071° 17.610. Take a look at the old station before following the well worn path east along the tracks towards the cache. There are some side trails that can be used to explore adjacent conservation areas.
