Geocache Description:

Note: as of Friday, April 16, problems with getting final approval from the highway office have forced us to call off any cleanup along the state right of way. Sorry for any inconvenience. We plan to try again sometime over the next few months. In the meantime, those who can are invited to meet, same time same place, for a quick meet & greet at the picnic area along 321. In the spirit of the original intent for the event, we'll be sure to leave the picnic area a little cleaner than we found it, and still call this one a success The paperwork (release forms) will be available for those who wish to take place in a cleanup in the future.
original event text follows:

The first Adopt-a-Highway trash pickup for the GSMGC will take place beginning at 2:00 PM on April 17. This date seems to work out for many people, plus it coincides with the 2nd annual Cache in Trash out Day.

Before the pickup, we need to have everybody who will be taking part sign a release form, as well as watch a short safety video. These should be filled out and turned in no later than Wednesday, April 14th. You can either drop them in the Travel Bug Jail or mail them to DavidMac at:

David McNeill
Maryville College box 2720
502 E Lamar Alexander Pkwy
Maryville,TN 37804

Please either post a note here or call David at 865-384-4486 if you drop off a form so that I can get them turned in. They are supposed to be returned to the TDOT office before the event, so we need them as soon as possible. Warning: video is nearly 50MB. Only download if you are on high speed internet. Otherwise, obtain a CD copy of the video.

The TDOT representative has asked that all participants be aware that:
- NOBODY can participate in a trash pickup without first signing a release. The state office needs as many of these as possible prior to authorizing the event in order to get an idea of group size. Newcomers can sign the forms the day of the pickup before beginning work, but they must be turned in to the TN office by a club representative the next week.
- Anybody ages 12-18 must get a separate form signed by their parent/guardian. Sorry, children under 12 are not allowed to participate.
- Pickup will take place close to traffic, which can be potentially dangerous.
- We are required to perform 4 pickups a year, or once every three months or so, if we wish to keep a sign. Look for more events in the future.
- TDOT will handle disposal of all trash. After we bag it up, they will come along within the next few days and pickup the bags. We are not to handle certain items, such as car batteries or personal hygiene products; they should be left in place and marked in some way. There are several additional precautions not mentioned in the video that we will go over prior to the pickup.

Be sure to bring:
- long pants; clothes that you don't mind getting messy
- gloves, preferably leather
- pickup stick/tool if you don't want to grab trash by hand
- plenty of water!

The coordinates given are those of a small picnic area at the southern end of our (tentative) section, highway 321. This section of road extends from here toward Maryville and the Foothills Parkway. We will meet and greet, distribute safety vests and have a short meeting, then get to work. The event will go for as long as interest/daylight/trashbags allow. After the event, the bagged trash will be picked up and our signs installed at each end of the section.
