Cache of the Month Ribon

Thank you to all who helped make these caches worthy of Wisconsin Geocaching Association Cache of the Month - January, 2005.

This cache is located in Manitowoc County’s newest – Point Creek County Park. This park is now under development but still open to public access. The South end of the park is where most of the work is taking place. It is also well worth a nice hike to see the deer, birds, and other wildlife there. The cache however is placed on the North side of the park and is completely inaccessible by trail. There currently are no trails within the park except for those created by wildlife and a few cleared by the forestry crews who are in the process of thinning out the conifers. The occasional wet ground will appear to moisten your socks and provide fertile environs for our promiscuous parasitic party poopers.

Parking is available at the only public “entrance” – N 43* 58.286' W 087* 42.115'

Good Luck and enjoy!

There is no longer a need to verify your find with the Secret Submarine Code Word.

RASHER’s Welders Rasher Patch Prior to Launch

Rasher: A vermilion colored rockfish or scorpionfish found along the California coast.

Keel laid: 4MAY42     Launched: 20DEC42    Commissioned: 8JUN43 with Cdr Edward S. Hutchinson in command

On her first war patrol, 24 September through 24 November 1943, RASHER operated in the Makassar Strait-Celebes Sea area, and sank a passenger-cargo ship in a submerged attack at dawn on 9 October. Four days later, off Ambon Harbor, she spotted a convoy of four merchantmen escorted by two destroyers and a "Pete" seaplane, fired two salvoes of three torpedoes each, and crash dived to avoid the destroyers, and bombs from the scout plane. A freighter broke up and sank, while the escorts struck back in a vigorous but vain counterattack. On the afternoon of 31 October, while patrolling the shipping lanes off the Borneo coast, RASHER commenced trailing a tanker, but because of a patrolling float plane, was unable to attack until night. RASHER then surfaced, attacked and sent the tanker to the bottom after a thunderous explosion of exploding torpedoes and gasoline.

The submarine's next victim was a tanker which lost her stern to a spread of three torpedoes on the afternoon of 8 November. RASHER escaped the escorts by diving deep and silently slipping away. A midnight attack on a second convoy off Mangkalihat resulted in hit on a tanker, but vigorous countermeasures by enemy destroyers prevented any assessment of damage. RASHER escaped the enemy surface craft and, her torpedoes expended, headed home and arrived at Fremantle on 24 November.

Uncertain as to the number of war patrols made. Sank 18 ships during its first 5 patrols for a total of 99,901 tons of shipping. The most tonnage sunk by any submarine in the world except for the submarine USS FLASHER. It also damaged 62,481 tons of shipping. Earned 7 Battle Stars, 4 Navy Crosses, 12 Silver Stars, 16 Bronze Stars, 1 Legion of Merit, 1 Navy & Marine Corp Medal, 6 Commendation and a Presidential Citation.

Decommissioned and struck from the Navy List 20DEC71      Sold for scrapping 7AUG74

06-04-04 When I placed the cache I averaged coordinates for quite awhile so I am rather confident in the coords. My guess would be that the very thick tree cover and the cache's proximity to it is resulting in the "off" readings. I will be sure to double check the coords next time I'm in the area. Bumped difficulty up by half and changed clue to be helpful.
6-13-04 Added Cache Rating System
10/07/04 - Cache visited on 10-5-04 for maintenance and event prep. Removed Secret Submarine Code Word requirement. Terrain upped by 1/2 point. Waypoints adjusted for accuracy. Clarified Clue. I think that's everything!

All I am going to say about this one is....wow.
Bushwhacked in, and bushwhacked out. We still don't even know if there was really an easier way.
Between the mosquitoes and the scratches from trees, I think I lost over a pint of blood.
Since we were completely lost, we thought about writing our wills on the cache log, but we managed to get out.

Typically, we cache paperless. Earlier this morning, our Palm decided it didn't want to play nice and so we had to rely on just having coordinates in the GPSr. Fortunately, a trail has been established through this area, which made access to the cache easier. We weren't sure what size cache we were looking for, but assumed it would be something large in size. While the cache wasn't where we would have initially expected, it was within 2 feet of GZ per our GPSr. TFTC

Visited this one with my cousin and first-time cacher StealthyTheGuy as our last cache of the day. Thought we trailblazed our way to the spot, but came up empty. I accidentally slipped and fell down the steep dropoff all the way down to the Lake Michigan beach. Don't worry; I slid on my butt the whole way down...a big mudslide. (Don't even ask why or how I got that close to the edge). Getting back up to the top was a chore. After that little misadventure, we couldn't spend too much more time here, so we headed back. Realized we should have marked where we parked & got a little lost on the non-existant trails on the way back. oops. I'll be back another time for this one when I'm feeling less accident-prone and misfortunate.

P.S. My cousin says he had fun and still wants to do more geocaching, even after this crazy failure. Probably because HE didn't fall off the side of a cliff.

First cache for the day. Took along three young relatives, 2nd, 4th and 6th grade kids. I had to listen to: "How much further?", "where are the toys?", "are we there yet?", "do you know what you are doing?", "is that GPS thing broken?", "are you getting us lost?".

Lots of toys swapped. Too numerous to list. We scrambled down the cliff to the water and found a location without much algae.

The kids were sooooo happy to see the car again. I guess being in the wilderness isn't their thing.

If you're with small kids, this is NOT a good geocache. The description doesn't lie! There's hardly any decent trials so you spend a lot of time bushwhacking. We did. Little feet will get tripped up a lot. Then we missed our exit point and walked out on someone's private road, which was ok, but walking off Lakeshore drive with a little kid wasn't fun with cars zooming by. Very scenic, I'll give it that! Left Discovery bug.

Was watching the “nearest” on the GPS when we spotted this cache. So we turned around and found the parking lot, GeoScout had pulled into the lot in the time it took us to turn around. It was only about .2 mile to the cache, so that’s not bad at all (right). We let GeoScout and crew head out and we gave them some time then we went in. Met GeoScout heading out without a find. Not good for the confidence. We really did not have any trouble with readings, just trouble finding a way through. We were very happy that the cache location had a great view and a breeze to keep the bugs down. Of course coming out we did find a better way. TNLN

Due to technical problems just couldn't get this one today. My dad didn't have the patience (we actually weren't planning on going after this one it was just on the way to Fisher Creek), and we were short on battery power and signal strength... I know... excuses... I'll be back, I'm working hard to get those Sub caches. aLpHa, bEtA, oMiCrOn, and oMeGa

Came up for a little Caching with Da Fu. Made the short trek to the site and we found the Cache pretty quickly. Nice area and a very nice view of the lake. Took the Target Gift Card, left a Magic Worm. TFTC

Second attempt on this one. Had great sattelite pickup today. Found this one a lot quicker this time around. Digital_Dan came down to help me with a few today. Took Compass on that clip thingy (yup... that's a technical term LOL), left sterling silver/turqoise ring and Packer Post-it notes. SLTFTC

Veni, vidi, sivi. I think the only park in this park is where I left my car. What development?

Did this one on a rainy day, so I came back drenched from head to toe.

In the parking lot I saw a young woman. She had a GPSr and was carrying what may have been cache sheets. So I popped the question: are you a geocacher? She said no, but she said that she hoped to be one some day! Actually she was an ornithologist from Green Bay.
Lotsa bands of vegetation between the car and the cache, despite the short walk.
For the record, my GPSr said I was 10ft away when at the cache.

How appropriate this cache seemed. Spent the afternoon at Maritime Days in Manitowoc with my folks & wife and we toured the USS Cobia at the museum. So we figured this was the perfect cache to cap off the day. Had a little trouble picking our way thru the pines to the cache site. Once at ground zero it also took a little searching, but Mrs. OuttaHand found it. Took a squishy water ball, left a signature OuttaHand carabiner/compass keychain. Thanks for a great cache! Hope to hit the rest of yours sometime in the future.

Sorry, couldn't find the glasses. We did find the cache! We recommend taking the trails cleared by the forestry crews and be sure to bring the bug spray. You can pretty much use them (trails and the spray) all the way. S, our 9 month old daughter, didn't much care for the bushwacking. We took the sub patch for a future history lesson and left a gift card to Target with five dollars still on it. TFTC.

LOST ITEM! I lost my new sunglasses yesterday while trying to find this cache. They are narrow with redish arms and I think they saye "MUDD" on them. If you find them (in one piece), please put in cache and contact me. Thanks!!

First To Find, what a great theme for the cache. Wife was not happy about the bushwacking I kept stirring up the bugs and she was following.Went by this little parking area on Monday and was by the SS Cobia also.
Was attached to a Patrol Squadron in Maine that hunted the Russian subs, so have left a sticker, shoulder patch and 2nd class pin to follow the theme. VP-10 was very good at tracking and if need be killing the subs.

I searched high and low for well over an hour for this one to no avail. The cache page says that it is a regular size cache, but I don't know how I could have missed that. I looked for a micro too...
