The march of progress.
This area has been known for years as the Willoughby Paddocks and was the subject of an appeal by the former local MP Peter Collins and a residents' action group to save it as community open space.
A good portion of the land has now been earmarked for a development of about 80 homes and its name commercialised to Market Garden on the basis that it was actually used as a market garden at some stage.
A "riparian corridor" of public land straddling Sailors Bay Creek, it was originally set aside as an extension to the Warringah Expressway which was to career through Castlecrag and on to Seaforth over a proposed, but of course never built, bridge. It sits between some suburban houses and school playing fields.
The new plan calls for a playground, picnic and parking areas and the retention and "rehabilitation" of bushland alongside the creek. There is also an exisiting "community eco garden" and a group of very out-of-place palm trees that were transplanted from another site.
There are several points of entry to the Paddocks. We have placed the lunchbox-sized cache in an area that we expect will remain untouched by the development.
Landcom is a NSW-Government owned corporation. To quote from their website:
"Turning these paddocks into prime property is a challenge requiring the best of Landcom's development and consultative skills". Time will be the judge.
Number 3 in our occasional Parks of Willoughby series.
