This is a two-part multi-cache adventure into the Twilight Zone
beginning in Mockingbird Park in Ellisville and based on Rod
Serling’s popular 1960s TV series.
Find two numbers XXX.XX and YYYY written on a beam under the bridge
in Magic marker. Use those numbers and the information below find
the final cache.
Parking may be found at the following locations:

The following is an excerpt from the script of an un-televised
episode of the Twilight Zone:
‘There is another dimension beyond that which is known to
geocachers. It is a dimension as vast as the earth and as timeless
as infinity. It is the middle ground between latitude and
longitude, between orienteering and geocaching, and it lies between
the pit of man's fears, and the summit of his GPS knowledge. This
is the dimension of navigation. It is an area which we call... the
Twilight Zone.’
‘Meet John and Jane Geocacher. They are participating in a
routine exercise in orienteering that will turn out to be anything
but routine. Their task is deceptively simple: navigate from point
A to point B then back to point A via the direct route. They
departed point A on a precise heading and traveled for an exact
distance arriving safely at their intermediate point. They then
departed point B along the precise opposite heading planning to
travel the exact same distance to return to A when, without
warning, things turned ugly. For lurking just beyond the horizon
and directly ahead is a region of warped space waiting to prey upon
the unsuspecting geocachers. Its twists and turns are so subtle as
to go unnoticed until it is too late. As their return attempt
unfolds their surroundings will become increasingly unfamiliar.
Soon they will be struck by the stark reality that they are
hopelessly off course and are not going to make back. They are
about to take a detour to the Twilight Zone.’
I have placed the first cache at the exact starting location of the
Geocacher’s fateful trip for any one interested in retracing
their steps and finding out what happened to them. The coordinates
are at the top of this page. Included in the cache are their
original orienteering instructions.
To complete this cache you will have to use your GPS to create a
new waypoint by projecting from an existing waypoint. See your
owner’s manual.
I have reproduced the information originally found at Waypoint
1:
Before continuing set up your GPS as follows: 1. North Reference:
TRUE MILS (Note 6400 mills equals 360 degrees) 2. Navigation Units:
KILOMETERS 3. Datum: WGS-84
The orienteering directions followed by John and Jane
Geocacher:
1. Depart point A of a true heading of YYYY mills and travel for a
distance of XXX.XX Km to reach point B.
2. Depart point B on the opposite true heading of (YYYY –
3200) mills and travel the same distance of XXX.XX Kilometers to
return back to point A. (3200 mills equals 180 degrees)
The coordinates for their departure point are the coordinates of
this cache and are listed at the top of this page.
To simulate their trip do the following:
1. Create a new waypoint, Point B, by using your GPS to project
from the coordinates of this cache along a true bearing of YYYY
mils for a distance of XXX.XX Kilometers.
2. Create another new waypoint, Point A, by using your GPS to
project back from Point B along true bearing of (YYYY –3200)
mils for a distance of XXX.XX Kilometers.
3. Set the newPoint A as a GOTO. If the distance to Point A is only
a few meters then you have made it back safely. If not you have
gone through the space warp and the next stop is the Twilight Zone
and cache #2.
Note: It is not necessary to visit Point B. (it is near the Mark
Twain National Forest)

December 16, 2009 by HJMJH (86 found) After doing a few other caches and learning what to look for at a virtual cache, and after a little tip from mpmcmillen, I came back to try again and found what was needed to do the projections. The magic of the Twilight Zone is yet another lesson learned from Mean Gene caches. When exploring the woods around the final I came across some old ruins/foundations, and an underground brick-walled dome-shaped hole (see pics). Anyone know what these are / used to be? Stumbling across manholes in the woods at Bluebird always makes me think of LOST.TNLN SL TFTC #68

April 19, 2009 by richarder (222 found) After help with the virtual part of the first step (Thanks Mean Gene), was able to figure out how to project the waypoints and due to the magic of the Twilight Zone was able to walk right to the cache. The rain seems to have kept most sane people out of the park today. Thanks for another GPSr lesson!

April 4, 2009 by CardsCacher (559 found) Visited wp 1 but didn't get the numbers. I guess I just don't get the virtual aspect of this cache.

November 30, 2008 by mpmcmillen (400 found) Tried to find WP1 back in July when WP1 was missing. No problem with it now that it is virtual. Did our projections and found the final. Our projection was just slightly off from the listed coordinates in the final cache. Would have been a little easier to find had we remembered the hint, but my son's "geo-sense" resulted in the find. September 21, 2008 by deepvalue (593 found) I had been to Bluebird Park a number of times, but didn't know there was a Frisbee golf course. Thanks for teaching us how to "project" and showing us a new part of the park.TN L:fan SL TFTC
