UPDATE: I had to change the requirement for completion of this virtual cache because people have begun to copy & paste the answer from Wikipedia... note the change below... You are searching for a Solemn Momument dedicated to the worst disaster to ever happen in Richmond, IN... Easy Virtual Cache, and enough shops & restaurants nearby to merit parking & taking a little stroll.
One day, not too horribly long ago, the City of Richmond, IN experienced a tragedy that it's residents wouldn't soon forget... As memorialized in the book "Death on a Sunny Street" an explosion caused by an underground gas line shook the entire downtown area one busy Saturday afternoon... many were killed, many were injured, and everyone was affected in some way... the explosion all but leveled a few city blocks, forever changing the once-hectic downtown area.... The Momument you are searching for stands as a Memorial to those who lost their lives on this fatefull day.... when the downtown area was rebuilt after the explosion, 5 blocks of Main Street were turned into a red-bricked Promenade, where city festivals were once held & fountains added charm & atmosphere... only a few years ago, this Promenade was done away with & Main Street was re-opened, with mixed feelings from city residents... the living monument to the victims of the explosion was forever gone, and the remaining plaque was moved a block away from the explosion site, to where it stands today... you must locate it & take a photo of the monument with your GPSr clearly in the photo & e-mail it to me at: isisenlightened@hotmail.com (you may also post your pic here if you like)

NEW: The local library has digitized the book written about this disaster, Death in a Sunny Street, and you can view it online CLICK HERE

There has also recently been a documentary made about the explosion, available on DVD, called 1:47

Find #4900 My last virtual cache in the community. Parked over at the bank and walked across the area. Almost started going down the wrong way on the street when I left. Great tribute to the event that occurred. Picture of me at the cache attached. TFTC

I never knew this about Richmond until I looked up this cache. This is a documentary I will have to see. Thanks for the history lesson of a town in our state. My gps is on top of the wreath in the pic. I wanted the whole monument in the pic, so the gps looks small. Thanks!!!!

This must have been a very low-point for the town. Glad that the terrible moment is remembered. Thanks for another virtual.
