This was my first cache.

Location: About 5 km north-west of Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.

The cache is above ground, but invisible from most viewpoints.
The terrain difficulty varies between 2.5 and 3.5, depending on your chosen route.

Directions:

The cache (accuracy 10 m; elevation 665 m) is hidden in a 10 litre translucent plastic bucket within prickly scrub about 250 m north of the summit of Flagstaff Hill (S 45°49.958' E 170°27.979' Elevation 668 m). See the hints for more detail.

To get there you have three options (in increasing order of difficulty):

1. Follow the Flagstaff Whare Flat Road from Three Mile Hill Road and park at the Bull Ring (S 45°50.066' E 170°27.094'; elevation 511 m). Now walk up the moderately steep gravel track for about 30 minutes until you reach the top of the hill (a 150 m climb; don't forget to stop and admire the panoramic view of the city and the Taieri plain (see the photos below)).

2. Park on Booth Road (S 45°50.459' E 170°29.605'; elevation 183 m). Walk for about 1 hour and 30 minutes, first up the remainder of Booth Road and then up a relentlessly steep gravel track to the top of Flagstaff Hill (a 500 m climb).

3. Park at the end of the seal on Spiers Road (S 45°51.142' E 170°27.932'; elevation 305 m). Next follow the gravel road up to a sign marking the beginning of the track. Follow the white or silver markers through the scrub for about 1 hour and 30 minutes (a 350 m climb; parts of the route are steep and muddy; bring a map and compass; you will meet a gravel track (at S 45°50.010' E 170°27.805'; elevation 647 m), now turn right and follow the track for 250 m to the top of Flagstaff Hill.

Free Hint: It is easiest approach the cache from the south-west.

Find...

Panorama from Cache Location (Summer)

Here is a panorama that I took from near the cache location, you can see the summit of Flagstaff Hill from there.
Taieri Plain (Summer)

This is a view over the Taieri plain from the track when I went to place the cache.
Spoiler! The Cache (Summer)

This is the cache just after I placed it.
Taieri Plain (Winter)

This is a view over the Taieri plain from the track when I went to check on the cache after an unusually early heavy snow fall (about six inches deep!).
Icicles (Winter)

These are some icicles I saw beside the track on the way.
Spoiler? The Cache (Winter)

The cache was really hard to find under that thick layer of snow.
Sunset (Winter)

This was the lovely sunset I saw as I just about to leave the cache. Please excuse the fingerprints, this was one of my pre-digital photos.

I maintained my cache today. I placed the contents of my archived Horseshoe Bend cache within. My double container system is keeping eveything very dry. Cheers, Donovan.

Find number 2 for the afternoon, takes me to 20, now. The prickly scrub has been poisoned off near the cache, so you won't need protection for a while.

Number one cache for the day on a school holiday walk over the Pineapple track with my boys. Today had it all - Sun, Wind, Snow!!!! Nice to see one of the original Dunedin caches doing well. TFTC.
