Although the cache page is not the format for a discussion I will post this so others will know why this is not the oldest active cache.

The excerpt below was taken from post #6 of this forum thread (visit link)

The Geocaching.com cache page for that cache is here. As you can tell, the cache owner turned against the game and obliterated the record of his caches.

Before Geocaching.com came on the scene, caches were listed on Mike Teague's website. You can see a late snapshot of that page here. The first cache is number 15 in the Geocaching.com database because when caches from the old list were first moved over to this site by Jeremy, he ordered them alphabetically and by state, with Washington (Jeremy's home state) coming first, followed by Oregon, and then the other states.

Un-Original Stash is today hidden in the same location at the first stash, only a little more off the road so as to be less prone to plundering.

Currently, the oldest active cache in the world is Mingo in Kansas.

I've seen a couple comments recently about this being the oldest remaining geocache. I'm not sure that's true, depending on how you define "oldest". If going strictly by hide dates, then I believe this to be the SECOND-OLDEST remaining cache - just one day younger than Mingo (GC30) in Kansas. I do wonder though why Mingo has a higher waypoint ID (GC30 vs. GC12) if it was placed before this one. Maybe whoever assigned the waypoint IDs for the caches already in place prior to when they started identifying them that way didn't enter them in the order they were placed? Or maybe this really is the oldest and the hide date is incorrect for one of the caches? Does anyone know for sure? Mingo's container has been replaced since it was hidden and as far as I know this one hasn't, so if oldest is defined based on the time since the current container was placed, then I think this would indeed be the oldest. In any case, it was fun finding it (and GC17 and the original stash tribute plaque) a few years ago when we were in Oregon.

It was my third time in the area so it was a little easier to find my way here. First time I was stopped about a mile down the hill by 3 feet of snow. The second time I parked in the road and hiked to GC12 and discovered the trail there. This time I brought mrsmales and parked at the old quarry (N 45° 18.065 W 122° 03.932) and picked up the trail there. We followed the trail to GC1WQQC (a recently placed cache) then continued along the trail before turning left on the trail that leads to GC17. From here we took the woods road (ATV trail) down the mountain to the road and picked up GC16A8Y cache then followed the road to the GC15V8K cache. From here with continued along the road to GC12 (so mrsmales could log it) and then followed the well worn trail up the mountain to the quarry and the car. A beautiful 7 plus mile easy loop hike with stunning views. The only part of the hike not on my GPSR was the ATV trail but common sense told me that puppy had to lead to the road. Thanks for a great hike; I would have never known about this area if not for GC12 and GC17. Geocaching at it’s very best. Thanks for keeping these old timers active. My input on oldest. The original log is here verifying the date ( although it is almost full, one page left so hurry if you want to log this puppy in the oldest logbook ). I don’t know how GS assigned the GC numbers when they converted stashes to caches and the data (like the dates) seems a little suspect.

Last cache of the day and then a hike back up the hill to the quarry. WWB found this a few months back and wanted me to log it as well, so I came with him on a business trip from NJ. We made a nice 8 mile hike out of it. Lots of people in the area, enjoying the sunshine before it starts to get cold. Couldn't figure out the people shooting their guns continually for hours - isn't that expensive? Loved finding this - really cool to find one that's been around so long. Thanks!
