Albuquerque's third "Big Eye" awaits your visit! (The other two for out-of-towners: the intersection of I-40/I-25 (Big I), and an adult store off of I-25). Park at the Albuquerque Open Space parking lot (N35 04.758/W106 29.070) at the eastern end of Copper (east of Tramway, just north of Tramway and I-40) Hike south-southeast .54 miles towards the saddle between the two lowest hills in this direction. From the saddle (N35 04.303/W106 28.936), hike east-northeast up the trail that generally follows the ridgeline. The Big Eye will be obvious as you approach it, about one mile from the saddle at 7224'. Coordinates are for the Eye; the Tupperware cache is under the 6' pine tree around behind the Eye. This trail is sometimes hard to follow and can be a bit strenuous in spots. If you get lost, just maintain your climb up the ridgeline, the trail will reappear. On the descent, a right fork at N35 04.374/W106 28.209 will take you to the parking lot as well. The trail also continues northeast to the Schedule 40 cache, but involves a rock scramble at one point (not recommended for dogs). As always, watch for snakes, cactus, and loose scree!

Well darn, at least I got a good hike out of it and a chance to see the new paint job. I left the cache page info in the car where it did me no good. I knew the cache was at the base of something, but didn't realize the coords were for the eye and there coords for the cache were not given. The eye looks pretty good at the bottom of rock to the right of the eye it is dated 11/8/09.

A BIG thanks to whoever went up there to re-paint the Big Eye!! I was thinking about doing it on my next hike up that way, but I guess that's not needed anymore. Thanks again!!

I'd read the logs and knew the eye had been painted over, so imagine my surprise when I crested the last ridge and saw the eye, freshly painted, staring back at me. It was a moment of unexpected joy.

Props: to leyenbrecher for the cache, Mike Coltrin for the route, and the Unknown Artist for the beautiful new paint job

Slops: to whoever put brown paint over the eye a couple of years ago
