Geocache Description:

The Cerne Abbas Giant is one of Dorset's most famous landmarks and is one of only two hill figures in Britain representing the human form, the other being the Long Man of Wilmington in East Sussex.

Also known as the "Rude Giant", the figure is 180 feet high and is thought to have been carved in Roman times, although recent evidence suggests that it might be a cartoon of Oliver Cromwell, dating to the mid 17th century.

Free parking is available at the view point at N50°48.784 W002°28.842 (ST662016) or at the picnic area at N50°48.711 W002°28.718 (ST664015). Click here for a map.

The cache is about a mile from the picnic area up the west side of Giant Hill. It's a steady climb but well worth it for the views! When we placed the cache the path went straight through a field of rape in full bloom.

After finding the cache you can make your way back via the east side of Giant Hill and take a walk around the village of Cerne Abbas which has lots of interesting old buildings. For a view of the village and surrounding countryside take the same east side path and when you get to the sign post indicating the way down Giant Hill follow the path straight ahead along the ridge of the hill. The view from just above the the Giant is superb. Note however that the direct route back from here is very steep!

Alternatively if you'd rather "cache and dash" you can park at the roadside near the Giant Head Caravan Park at N50°49.476 W002°27.772 and the cache is a 10 minute walk from there. We usually knock on the door of the house to ask permission and they let us park inside the caravan park itself.

The cache is a 2 litre tupperware box and was restocked on 27 February 2005. Don't feel obliged to take anything but please leave something of similar value if you do (not a travel bug). All our items are new and cost at least £1 each. PLEASE DON'T TAKE SOMETHING JUST TO LEAVE IN ANOTHER CACHE. Feel free to take one of our handcrafted geocaching badges (no swop required).
