Bodies were wrapped in robes or tule mats and deposited in canoes, which were placed in the woods, rocky points, or in cedar vaults on islands. The Chinook word for "to die" is "Memalust". Sepulcher Island was named and visited by Lewis and Clark. The monument on the island visible from this overlook was an Indian gravesite until the dam flooded this area on the Columbia. Only one person is still buried on the island.
To find the final cache site add the year Lewis and Clark named the island (A) to the bracketed part of the north starting coordinate, then subtract the year they visited the island (B).
N45 41.(652) +______(A)-_______(B) - 18 = the final N coordinate.
To find the West final coordinate count the number of letters in the name of who is buried on the island, then multiply that number by 6 (# of Letters X 6 = ___(C)).
The answer is then added to the underlined starting west coordinate.
121 21.(046) +____(C) + 51 = the final W.
The final cache is NOT near the cliff; Toodizzydames don't go near cliffs!!
WARNING: This is the GORGE...so caches come with warnings! There is the chance of wind gusts that will blow you right off the cliffs if you get too close to the edge! Rattlesnakes, sudden drop offs and poison oak are also in the area. Not safe for small children or dogs.
