Geocache Description:

Wooded hillside. Some steep terrain and loose footing.
Trade normal cache items. Do not remove any Marshall items from the cache. Enjoy them and return them to the box! Thanks!

50 cal. ammo box with trade items and laminated sheet describing the history of the Marshall University plane crash that occured November 14, 1970. (please do not remove any Marshall items from the cache)

At 7:40 p.m., a chartered aircraft carrying 70 team members and fans plus five crewmen, crashed due to rain, fog, and smoke. The tail of the plane reportedly hit the hilltop west of the cache site, causing the plane to crash. There were no survivors. As a graduate of Marshall University, this event will forever be remembered by the people of this area and everyone who has attended Marshall. In spite of that tragic event, Marshall has gone on to overcome it's loss. Along with several conference titles and bowl wins, some of the more notable Marshall graduates have gone on to become NFL stars. These include Chad Pennington, Randy Moss, Byron Leftwich, and Troy Brown along with countless others.
Marshall Football has truly gone from "Ashes to Glory". A documentary was filmed a few years back by that name and in 2006 the feature film "We Are Marshall" was released in theaters nationwide. The film was a pretty accurate recount of the crash and its impact on the community.

Near the site there is a new roadside marker with a decription of what took place at the site.

To find the cache, park on the berm at the end of the guardrail on the wide dead end spur of route 52. There is no traffic on this road. Enter the woods from here or near the new gravel road further up the hill. No need to cross the airport gate, just get on the little ridge above the highway cut. The deer know the way. Note that most of the trees in the crash area are less than 35 years old. A few of the trees have blown over along the old ridge trail. The site was bulldozed after the FAA investigation. 75 souls were lost in the valley below.

Be sure after you make the find to re-hide it well and cover your tracks to make it more fun for the next finders....LETSRACE (history by ANGRY BEAVER)
