Geocache Description:

Find a bicycle velodrome, indoors or outdoors, anywhere in the world. Snap a shot of the sign for the velodrome and include your GPS in picture. Also take a picture of the velodrome track if you can.

Velodromes are the facilities used for bicycle track racing. They can be indoors or outdoors; the riding surface can be made of wood, concrete, asphalt, or cement, and, occasionally, grass or dirt. Velodrome tracks are usually 333.3 meters around, although they can vary from under 200m to over 500m long at the inside edge.

Bicycle track racing was popular in America back in the early 1900's. By the "Roaring 20's", indoor track racing had become one of America's most popular spectator sports, drawing huge crowds in stadiums and auditoriums such as Madison Square Garden in New York City. By the late 1930's and early 40's, the popularity of American bicycle track racing declined due to the automobile, WWII, and television. Virtually all of the hundreds of indoor bicycle tracks were torn down and most of the outdoor tracks were demolished during this period.

In the late 1950's and early '60's, America's interest in bicycle track cycling was slowly revived. Today there are a couple dozen velodromes in America with others being built.

There are already locationless geocaches for almost every other sport. Now here's one for cyclists.

To log this cache, you must take photos of the velodrome's sign with your GPS in the picture, plus a picture of the velodrome track itself if you can. The velodrome can be in any country. You cannot log a velodrome that has already been logged. You have to take new photos, not use vacation pictures. Downloads from the web do not count. Also one log per person and you can't log something already logged as a cache elsewhere. If you can provide some information and history regarding the velodrome, please do so.

Have fun and enjoy watching some bicycle track racing if you can!
