Geocache Description:

A pleasant stroll through the park in historic Bishop's Stortford.

This cache is to replace "Milton's Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" in Milton where I lived until I recently moved to Bishop's Stortford. That cache was geomuggled, but hopefully this one's hidden a bit better!

There have been settlers in Bishop's Stortford for over 250,000 years, all making use of the excellent crossing point for the river Stort and the valley basin that it lies in. The town is not named after the river, but the other way around! During Anglo-Saxon times the settlement was known as Estereferd, probably because a family called Estere owned or controlled the river crossing (Estere's Ford). This slowly got mangled to Stortford, and in 1060 the Stortford Manor was sold to Bishop William of London and henceforth it was known as Bishop's Stortford. It was not until mapmakers in the early 1600's came to Stortford that the river acquired it's current name - the mapmaker's assumed the town must have been a ford over the Stort and the river got its name!

Bishop's Stortford town park extends for over 1km north from the town centre and there's no real development for a full mile. It's thus a little bit of paradise I found after leaving Milton in Cambridgeshire in November 2004.

This is a fairly standard cache hidden at the north of the park area near the river. There's light tree cover, but it shouldn't be too bad even in the summer. This cache requires wading and is therefore not suitable for small children or those in wheelchairs.
There's ample parking in the town centre, where there are also many fine historic sights - St Michael's church, many 16th-century coaching inns and lovely walks along the river towpath. Closer parking can be had at the Grange Paddocks pool and gym centre (N51° 52.687' E0° 9.709' or thereabouts). Closer parking can be had at the end of Cannon Mill Lane: N51° 52.865' E0° 10.092' but the walk isn't as nice.

The cache itself is a small clip-lock box with a few swaps in it. Please make sure it is as far in as possible when you re-hide it (you'll see what I mean) and if possible find some nearby large-leafed vegetation to conceal it a little better fro mthose who like to paddle.

You will need to wade to get to this cache!

Good hunting!
