Eight miles SW of Sunriver between Spring River Rd. (Rd. 40) and South Century Drive (Rd. 42).
You can hike, ride a bike or, if you are physically challenged, drive a 4X4 close to the top of this prominent Central Oregon butte. The best way to the top is a narrow, rough double track that starts at a USFS gate at the NE base of the butte and ascends the East side. The numerous windfall trees that currently (2006) block the route prevent people from driving. All other routes involve bushwacking through manzanita. The cache is an ammo box with an orange lid. Pistol Butte once had a fire lookout which is an indication of the quality of the view. Look for the Bald Eagle that is sometimes soaring above the slopes below.
