You are standing in front of the historic Ed
Sullivan Theatre. Over the years there have been numerous Stage, Radio and
Television shows preformed here.
Once upon a time it was known
as "Hammersteins Theatre".
Later it changed to "Manhattan Theatre".
In 1936 CBS bought the building and turned it
into "CBS Radio Theater".
In 1967 the name was changed to "The
Ed Sullivan Theatre" although it is still officially CBS
studio 50.
The list of shows that originated from here is too long to list
here. The most famous one is obviously The Ed Sullivan Show
In 1955 The Ed Sullivan Show premiered and ran till 1971.
During that time for one hour every Sunday night at 8pm almost the entire
country tuned in to see everyone who was anyone make an appearance. Some of the
more notable appearances were
11-Dec-55 Sugar Ray Robinson
09-Sep-56 Elvis Presley
27-Dec-59 Charlton Heston
09-Feb-64 Beatles
17-Sep-67 The Doors
As you stand here just take a moment to think about the
thousands of people that have crossed through those doors. Unfortunately there
are no tours of this theatre so you'll have to be satisfied with a trip under
the marquee.
