Geocache Description:

Welcome to Sterne's Woods and Fen!

This cache was originally placed in May of 2002 by a past employee of the Crystal Lake Park District. When he left the cache was left on its own, with no one here aware of it. Fortunatly, a local cacher decided to keep it up and running. In March of 2009 I became aware of this and formally adopted it. The cache is the same; I have just made some changes to the page.

Looking Northeast from the bottom of the eight

Located in Sterne’s Woods and Fen, this cache is hidden among a grove of pine trees that were planted by the Sterne’s family sometime around the 1950’s. Before they were planted most of the northern portion of the park was open wetland with few or no trees. The southern portion of the park started out as upland forest that gradually transitioned into prairie.

Planting the "Cathedral"

Parking can be found at N42 15.721 W088 18.523. This is the main parking lot for Sterne’s and is located on Hillside road. The trail infront of you is the top of a big figure eight, and you need to get to the bottom of it. Please use the main trail until you reach the pines, then get ready for the fun to begin.

"And over there, gentlemen, will be a great place to hide a cache someday!"

DO NOT BUSHWACK!! You will get hopelessly lost in the think underbrush. Find a point of attack and stick with it. You’ll know when to venture away. The reason this has a difficulty of 2 ½ stars is your GPSr will have problems because of the thick tree cover. In fact, it’s pretty useless the last hundred feet or so. The original person to hide this cache provided a pretty detailed hint, I recommend you have it with you when you seek this cache.

Have fun!
