A National House of Prayer for All People. In Honor of God
Washington National Cathedral

A cathedral was man's attempt to display faithfulness to God. Cities and denominations would "race" to build the highest (reaching toward heaven, closer to God). The gothic (pointed) arch and buttressing allowed architects to design even higher and lighter. This is one of last ones started & completed. It is a relatively new cathedral.

There are many sculptures, including one of Darth Vader from Star Wars. Each and every gargoyle is different and hand carved. Some of the finest stained glass craftsmanship can be found here. And there are extensive gardens that are well maintained.

If you can, get a tour of the tower for an incredible view of the Federal City below. The church was constructed on the highest ground in Washington DC (Mount Saint Albans). The grounds may be higher than the Washington Monument.

This is the cathedral that hosted the National Memorial Service for the victims of the 911 attacks. There are at least a half a dozen different tours available , check the web site for information.

To log the find, email me the names and dates that appear on right and left corners (relative to the main entrance) of the two west towers. The coordinates above take you to the right side. The left side is at N38 55.834 W077 04.283. Please don't post the answers (even if encrypted).

Or you may post a photo with GPS of something you found interesting or inspirational in or on the church, grounds or the view.

A nice place to visit after a fresh coat of snow. Was concerned I would not know what I was looking for when I got there, but it was blatantly obvious. This one was #8 out of 10 for today, #115 for 2010 and #350 overall. TFTC.

Been to DC numerous times but never to the Washington National Cathedral. I was quite impressed. Well worth the visit.
Sun was directly behind the rose window which was looking its best. See photo
