Geocache Description:

November 26, 2004 update--this cache has been adopted by a new owner. The original information is provided below, and has been edited only to remove some obsolete remarks. Be sure to see the alternative directions which follow.

Welcome to our first combined Geocache/Letterbox stash which was planted on June 16, 2002.

The T.H. site has a distinct “off the beaten track” feel, but is only a short, ½ mile jaunt along (mostly) gently rolling, piney terrain from where you’ll park. These trails are eminently mountain bikeable.

Whip out your Hagstrom Map and find the intersection of New London Turnpike and Congdon Mill Road in West Greenwich (it is accessible from Route 3 (from the West) and Henry Brown Road (from the East), both paved. It is also accessible from the South by following New London Turnpike north from 102, but be prepared for a stretch of dirt…).

Once you’re at the intersection of New London Turnpike and Congdon Mill Road, drive approximately 1/10 mile West-Northwest on Congdon Mill Road where you’ll see the trail on your right leading North into the woods. At N41.36,633 / W071.36.257 you’ll meet the photogenic Toaster Head.

The Toaster Head Geocache is nearby at N41.36.642, W071.36.274.

Note, be sure to wear blaze orange if venturing out during hunting season (generally November – March). Be sure to sign the log and take one of the trinkets we left but don't take the stamp or the ink --- it's for the letterboxers. Feel free to stamp the toaster head image into your notebook though! Happy trails.

Alternative directions--when attempting to follow the original directions, some searchers have been led into a swamp. The directions below describe a drier route to the cache.

  • Park on the New London Turnpike, 0.6 mile northeast of the intersection with Congdon Mill Road, at N41 36.674' W71 35.941'. The straight-line distance to the cache is about 0.3 mile, but you will have a walk of just over half a mile.
  • Follow a little-used side trail on the north side of the road. About 0.1 mile in, you will encounter a well-used ATV trail.
  • Turn left on this trail. Before you walk away, take a good look at where the side trail leaves the ATV trail. You might want to leave a trail marker or take a waypoint so you can find it again on your way out. The ATV trail winds around and crosses a small stream on a rustic bridge. Your GPS will be telling you to leave the trail, but don't do it. After about 0.36 mile on this trail, you will come to a wider trail (look for a prominent rock in the intersection).
  • Turn right on the wide trail. You can follow your GPS from here, if you have a good signal (which is doubtful). Walk north about 0.08 mile (about 169 paces) you will come to an intersection with another wide trail. You may encounter the Toaster Head effigy at this intersection.
  • Continue in the same direction another 50 paces.

Accessibility in snow - May be difficult in deep snow.
