Oakland Mole Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Krypton: As there's been no response to my previous note, I assume that the cache is not going to be repaired or replaced, so I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us, and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it

Thanks for your cooperation!

Before there were container ships or an eastern span of the Bay Bridge, there were ferryboats and a railroad called Southern Pacific. The SP is no more. However, on the way to the cache site or departing 7th to southbound 880, you can see the company emblem over the causeway at N 37 48.505, W 122 18.493. If coming from or going to the West Grand/ Maritime exit off 80/580, you may find a restored GP-9 diesel in SP’s Black Widow colors, doing service at Oakland Terminal Railway at N 37 49.460, W 122 18.100. See (visit link) for SP no. 5623. The former Oakland 16th Street Station and Tower may be view through barbed wire, if coming from the West Grand exit from west 80 to southbound 880 or going to the West Grand ramp to northbound 880; W 37 48.971, W 122 17.826. For a photo of the once stately but now vandalized interior see (visit link)

The Port of Oakland has opened a lovely portside park (N 37 48.326, W 122 20.020) with playground and a small train museum in the train control tower. The display (featuring photographs and a second floor view) was opened daily, until recently shuttered by temporary budget cuts. See (visit link)

Beyond the playground, the gate to the fishing pier is unlocked dawn to dusk. Please hide the tub from fishermen.
