German: Der Vogelsberg, welcher sich über ein Gebiet von ca.2.500 Quadratkilometern erstreckt, ist die größte Vulkan- und Basaltregion in Mitteleuropa. Er ist ein erloschener Schildvulkan, der während des frühen Tertiärs aktiv war. Die Vulkanaktivität begann vor über 19 Millionen Jahren endete zunächst vor 13 Millionen Jahren. Danach folgte eine lange Pause mit intensiver Erosion (mit Abtragungen, Höhlenbildungen und Verwitterungen). Die vulkanische Aktivität begann dann wieder vor ungefähr 10 bis 9,6 Millionen Jahren, bevor sie endgültig erlosch und der Erosion ausgesetzt war. Das Zentrum des Vulkans war der "Oberwald", wo auch am längsten vulkanische Aktivität, herrschte. Hier liegt auch das Gebiet der "Geiselsteine". Während der vulkanischen Aktivität des Vogelsberges, die über mehrere Millionen Jahre andauerte und von längeren Pausen unterbrochen war gab es unvorstellbar große Lavamengen, die Felsen und Spalten bildeten. Deshalb ist das hier vorherrschende Gestein der Basalt. Probiere an den angegeben Koordinaten aus, was mit einem magnetischen Kompss passiert (GPS-Kompass ist nicht so gut dazu geeignet): N 50° 32.011 E 009° 14.576. English: The Vogelsberg, which extends over an area of approximately 2,500 square kilometres, is the largest basalt region in continental Europe. It is an extinct shield volcano. It was active during the early tertiary period. Volcanic activity began about 19 million years ago and lastet initially until approximately 13 million years ago. There followed a long pause with extensive erosion (levelling, weathering, hollowing-out). The volcano erupted again some time between 10 million and 9.6 million years ago before it finally became extinct. Volcanic activity probably lastet longest in our Oberwald-area. This was the centre. Since then the mountains have again been exposed to weathering and erosion. During the volcanic activity in the Vogelsberg, which lastet for millions of years and was repeatedly interspersed by long pauses, almost unimaginable quantities of lava spewed from areas of subsidence and from crevices and vents in the earth and poured over the surface, which was formerly a seabed dating from the middle Oligocene about 55 million to 60 million years ago. The peculiarity of the "Geiselsteine" is, that this basalt contents iron. Bring a magnetical compass with you and walk around at the coords: N 50° 32.011 E 009° 14.576. What phenomenon can you observe.
