Geocache Description:

This cache site was chosen so that travelers on I-75 (N or S bound)or travelers on Rt. 6 (E or W) can stretch their legs and rack up an easy, but interesting find. Cache is only 1/4 mile from I-75 . Get off at the Rt. 6 exit #179. County Home Rd. is just east of there.

Cache is located at the Wood County Historical Center & Museum, on the grounds of the former Wood Co. Infirmary built in 1868, and commonly referred to as the "Home". This unique site is one of the last county infirmaries, also called Poor Farms. The park, which is situated along the Portage River, includes a large museum, an herb garden, all the old buildings including the lunatic house, short nature trails, and points of interest including a large working oil derrick, and a collection of old farm implements.

The home operated as a poor farm from 1869 to 1971, taking in the counties poor, sick, elderly, mentally ill, and orphans. The museum is in the Victorian Era Infirmary with 30 rooms of exhibits. The 50 acre park is open year-round. The Museum is open for tours April-October. (Tue-Fri 9:30--4:30, and on Sat. and Sun. 1pm to 4pm.) The Museum office is open M-F 9:00 to 5:00.
