The UHF Tulsa Tour! Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

beatnik: I'm going to go ahead and archive the UHF cache. Mostly because I'm too lazy to change all the clues again since it would have to be moved. (hey at least I'm honest)

I gave the last two people the option to log it that completed the puzzle. Those of you that have found it look for a bunch of new caches in the area. I am planning to place several more.

The UHF Tulsa Tour!

It’s probably no secret that Tulsa, OK is not one of the movie capitals of the world. We’ve had our brushes with fame. SE Hinton had a few successful movies filmed here in Tulsa. You may remember Tex starring Matt Dillon, in 1982. The Outsiders introduced Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, and Matt Dillon, in 1983. And lastly Rumble Fish starred Matt Dillon and Mickey Rourke in 1984.

It wasn’t until 1988 that the greatest movie of all time was brought to the streets of Tulsa. Ok maybe it wasn’t the world’s greatest movie but still one of funniest spoof films ever made. Weird Al Yankovic’s UHF was shot right here in Tulsa. The movie is about a would be loser who assumes control of the low rated U62 UHF TV station and starts producing his own ratings busting strange programs. I could go on but there is plenty of information to be found online if you’d like to read more.

This summer the film was finally released on DVD which came as a big surprise to fans. The original distributor Orion bit the dust and the VHS version has long been out of print. A grass roots effort by fans managed to bring about the DVD release and so was born this geocache. In the extras of the DVD is the commentary of the film by Weird Al. Finally brining the argument of movie locations to an end with detailed street addresses for most every film shoot location.

In this cache you will take a tour of Tulsa visiting the film shoot locations. At each location you will receive a clue to help you find a final special destination. At the final destination you will find a cache container with lots of goodies. Including the UHF DVD, A Nutty Professor II DVD, a blow-up dinosaur, a whoopee cushion, One Spatula purchased at Spatula City (yes the actually film location!), Some wacky bouncing balls, one rubber chicken travel bug, 6 happy face balls, an Eskimo Joes keychain, my signature geopencils, and the ever popular Log Book. Sorry the fish was too big to stuff into the ammo box, plus it smelled really bad. (if you’ve seen the movie you’ll get that lame joke) Please trade fairly for these items since this is long geocache and worthy of just reward. I’d hate to finish the cache and find nothing but a plundered box with junk in it. Although the first person to find the cache has fair game on the UHF DVD as reward.

To make things easier you can download the Easy GPS File for this cache. Click the webpage link at the top and the file should download. You should also print out this page for the locations you will need to travel to. The wise geocacher will find these points in order if done from start to finish in one day. Though I suppose it is not required to do it that way. Here are the waypoints required to find the cache if you plan to enter them manually.

UHF1. This was once a Harden’s Burgers and referred to as Big Edna’s Burgers in the movie. Here we find George getting tossed out on his face after getting fired by Edna. You are looking for the address. What is the first number in the address? (I think the new owner has covered up the number when they painted, but you can still find the address number you need with ease)
UHF2. Let’s go Bowling for Burger’s!! The commercial spoof was filmed at this famous Route 66 hot spot. The second number in the buildings address is your clue.
UHF3. Down the road we find another commercial spoof site. Plot’s R Us. Was filmed here. You will find a small building here with an address. The last two numbers are the same, that number is your clue.
UHF4. Next we have City Hall where we find the late Billy Barty and Fran Drescher getting ready to broadcast the breaking news except for those dirty thugs from Evil Channel 8. At this spot you will see a date (no not that kind of date! You’re not on 11th anymore!) April ?, 1902. Find the day and you have your magic number.
UHF5. Gandhi II “No more mister passive resistance!” In the alley behind this spot Gandhi can be found showing the bad guys a thing or two. There is a manhole cover on the north side of the road. (NOT IN THE STREET) The date on the cover is April ?, 1914. The missing day + 2 is your number.
UHF6. The epicenter of the movie, UHF Channel 62. Sadly the building in the movie is no longer here, but you can see the transmitter that zaps channel 8. Look for the FCC tower number 101836?. Find the missing number (the last number). NOTE: I have had reports of problems at this location. Until I can clear things up please do not approach the tower! You can drive by if you want on the road to see the tower but do not drive to it. If you do so, you are doing so at your own risk. Until I can change the clue your answer is 2
UHF7. “Hey kids! Let’s go to Spatula City!!” Rumor has it the sign that was erected on the BA expressway at Memorial for this spoof stayed up for many months. Although the fictional store, a Warehouse Market grocery, is on the other side of town. Add the second and fourth numbers in the address to get this clue.
UHF8. You are looking for a bar in case you need a drink by now. This was used for the bar scene when Michael Richards first takes the air. It also doubled as the restaurant scene where Al stood up Victoria Jackson. You will see the next number by looking at the address. You only have one choice for your number. Figure it out?
UHF9. This south Tulsa office building was used as the exterior for Evil Channel Eight. Find the address in Gold on the building. The first number minus the second number is your next clue.
UHF10. This building had just been constructed at the time and was still mostly empty. The empty floors were set up to create the offices of both TV stations. The cast and crew stayed next door for easy access to the set. A perfect setting to shoot the movie. The second letter in the building’s major occupant is also a roman numeral. That numeral minus one is your clue.

Now it’s off to the cache. It’s not too far from your last clue, but you might want to mark your car in case you get lost. This is the formula for the cache location. Insert each number where is goes.
