Geocache Description:

Easy terrain if you follow the trails and tractor paths. A bit harder if you attempt a direct route. It's a nice walk if you park at the end of a road. (N42 59 59.762 W75 25.513) IF I recall correctly it was about 780ft ASL (level terrain)

A LITTLE HISTORY: I believe that this is lock #40. Located on the (former) Chenango Canal, although confirming that has proven difficult. If you park at the coordinates given, you most likely will walk along the bed of the (again...former) New York, Western and Ontario RailRoad. These (the canal and RR) were the primary supply/transportation routes to the bustling city of Utica. As you walk, look for coal left over from the days when the trains were active. The path, in places was also used as a towpath for the canal's mule teams.

ONCE YOU FIND IT: Please sign the logbook, and please help yourself to a trinket or two, just leave something in it's place. I began the collection with a small plastic American flag, some Senior Airman (USAF) stripes, among other things. (I'm a bit of a patriot serving 6+ years in the Army and since been in the Air Force) It would be nice to keep to this theme, but it is for all to enjoy, so take/leave whatever you want. (as long as it's tastefull)

HAPPY HUNTING!
