Warning

Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

This Virtual Cache takes you to Embudo Cave in the Sandia Mountains. The University of New Mexico used to have a remote cosmic ray telescope within the cave, but it was abandoned years ago.

Old maps and hiking books list Embudo Cave trail, which has long since vanished, having been over-run by the Sandia Peak Ski Area. I searched around the area many times before I finally found it.

The site is adjacent to the Cibola ski run, in a small stand of aspins. The cave entrance is covered and locked these days for safety's sake.

To prove that you have visited this virtual cache, e-mail me at ganelo@earthlink.net. Please supply the needed information in parentheses in the description of the cave site:The cave is covered-over with (fill-in the color) metal doors and roof. The door has (fill-in the number) hinges on the (left or right) side. There are (fill-in the number) large locks on the door, which require a (fill-in the number)-sided key.

Please don't include the answers on the geocaching web site (even in encrypted form), which would spoil the fun for others.

I hope you enjoy the outing.

#2010 I finally came back to get this virtual cache before winter sets in again. I've tried 2 times in the winter but never made it up the slope. This place is hidden very well from the ski slopes. I saw 2 young Bucks as I was leaving that were around 200 feet away from the cache. They stood still while I took some video of them. E-mail has been sent to the CO. Thanks for the fun!!

This was a great discovery! I don't know how many times I've come by that very spot without even knowing something like that was even there! Awesome. TFTC!

Thanks for a cool cache. One more place I would never have seen had it not been for this virtual. I felt for you when I thought of you scouring the mountainside to find this place, ha ha! TFTC!

Looks a bit early in the season for this one unless you like to go cross country skiing.

Made the big climb today. We did the "suicide run" in probably the least desirable way....up. Thanks for bringing us to this interesting spot.
