This is a very special cache to us. You will need to pace yourself to do this cache. The track in follows the Bridle path untill the far side of the dam. dont go onto private land nearby. follow the instructions to avoid this.
Old Cave. Placed by Lyn Pat and Nathan Sunday 25th August 2002. TAKE A TORCH. This is the second cache in the Ellis Brook reserve Area. Remember the park closes at 5pm and the gates are locked so done get stuck in there. There is a BBQ nearby if you choose to park in that area. Make sure you consider your car safe before leaving it. You could leave it near the gates on the way in where there is a house nearby. This is only about 200 meters more walking and much safer than finding a window broken and your car damaged.
We chose this location because we used to live in the old Farm down the bottom of the valley (Hillside Farm) about 20 years ago and would wander the hills when we could. The dam you will walk past was the main water supply for the farm at the time and we would often go to check the dam to see if it was polluted from dead kangaroos or as we found one time a homeless man using it as his bath. Regrettably we had to drink the water after his ablutions.

Above the dam is a tunnel, which we think was dug to check for the blue-metal quality or possibly had something to do with gold mining. We hear its good gold finding country if you want to try your hand at panning in the stream.
The farm is private land so we have devised the best way to get to the Dam, Tunnel and then the cache, which in our opinion would have the best view of Perth you will ever find. You also will find no one else will be up here as its not the sort of place others just happen to be walking past.
We have made a list of marker points for your GPS if you follow them you will go the best possible way to get to the cache if you decide to go another way then don’t use private land to gain access.

There is a second access from the end of Hayward road that is a bridle track and we believe is probably public land.
1. Park at Ellis Brook lower car park S 32.03.445 E 116.01.627 or park at end of Hayward road (shorter walk and safer for your car we think, but we aren’t to sure if this land is private or not. It is a Bridle track so it should be OK) S 32.03.254 E 116.01.499 (this figure is only approx.)

2. Bridle track follows watercourse up the hill towards the dam. S 32.03.220 E 116.01.595
3. Top of dam wall. This is the place that you leave the Bridle track and walk though the bush. We suggest following the kangaroo tracks where possible. S 32.03.154 E 116.01.693

4. The cave, tunnel, whatever it is? You tell us!!! Take a torch you will need it. S 32.03.095 E 116.01.798.
5. The cache. S 32.03.043 E 116.01.816 You will be walking straight up from the cave on the way you will see another cave that isn’t dug into the hill so far. Keep on walking and follow the GPS to the site. The cache is hidden between two rocks and under a few cover stones to keep it from accidental finds. ( as if someone will be up here ).
Contents are varied so add and take what you like.
The view is fantastic. Make sure you take adequate water and possibly some food. Your mobile will work a treat up here so ring a friend as tell them you can see their house from here. Binoculars would be handy too on a clear day. Hope you like the cache. Lyn Pat and Nathan.

Came up and found this after camping below with the scouts. We had a bit of a walk up around the hill and saw the old mine. Even though it is possible to bypass the grating, I kept the kids out of the mine although some were keen to explore.

After all the stormy weather recently I had doubts about dropping most of my family off for Scout camp at the Hill side farm. It was still raining when we packed this morning and when we arrived. I had devised a plan to walk up to the cache with my oldest, io_sono_affamato while the rest were striking camp. I dragged that boy all over the hill...as the directions of course were from another entry point. Having the permission to go on the private property helped a bit and there were great trails mostly to the cache but we still rambled quite a bit. It was early on in the day 8:30am, so we startled a few jumpers and birds and really wet so that my pants were soaked by the time we got there. The cache is in great shape and we also found the cave after some bushbashing. I can't believe I left my camera at home, I had a TB that wanted to visit a cave with me and a beautiful scout coin from Scotland that I left with my husband for the Scouts to drop into the cache. I hope they make it up there.
Thanks for the great cache Lyn and Pat, I think it's really neat that you lived there a while back. It is now owned by a school I believe. Our scout master who works at the school is in charge of the farm and so we were able to have a camp there.

A nice morning for a walk. Found the cache without any problem. We enjoyed the area. On our return to where the car was parked Bruce met up with the person running the Pistol Club and it turned out he lived in Woomera at the same time as Bruce so they had a good chat. Small world. TNLN. Thanks Lyn Pat and Nathan
