Spooky's Halloween Cache Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

CTReviewer: Greetings from Geocaching.com

I have been looking at caches in the area and it looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache. If you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

When repairs to this cache are completed and it is time to have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your “My Cache Page” and clicking the link of your cache.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

Thanks for your understanding,
CTReviewer

Geocache Description:

This cache is located in Bigelow Hollow State Park, Union, CT. Park in the "Mashapaug Boat Launch and Picnic Area" parking lot, which is the last lot you get to in the park. Follow the "Mashapaug Pond View Trail" to the cache.

The hike to this cache is about one and one quarter miles, the path is a bit narrow, but it generally isn't too steep.

Note: As of February, 2003 I now live in San Diego. Since this is a popular cache there is really no reason to archive it. Cachers please do what you can to keep this cache alive. Thanks, Spooky

There are many trails near the parking lot, so I'll get you started on the right foot:

Begin your hike on the dirt road to the north of the parking lot. Take the second trail on the left - there is a brown sign with a yellow picture of two hikers marking the trail. (Note: the first trail on the left will take you on the correct trail, but in the wrong direction!) You are then following "Mashapaug Pond View Trail" which is marked by the "blue with white bar" paint on the trees. When you get to the sign for "Mashapaug Cove Picnic Area" you are well on your way!

You should be able to see Lake Mashpaug for most of your hike. Watch carefully and you may get a glimpse of the famous lake monster named "Paugy". Other spooky things to keep an eye out for: enchanted trees, ferocious fungus, and belligerent boulders. Oh, and eyeballs people have dropped while watching for trees, fungus, and boulders.

Heavy tree cover near the cache may make it hard for you to get a good lock on it. We went back several times and took an average to get the co-ordinates. The spoiler hint might make things easier for you.

This cache is contained in a clear rectangular Rubbermaid container.

Fun spooky stuff for all ages:
- Six Halloween superballs.
- Six pairs of glow in the dark fangs.
- Pez Witch, Pez Pumpkin, Pez Ghoul.
Fun spooky comics (bring one and trade!):
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer no 20 - Double Cross 1 of 1
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer no 35 - False Memories Series 1 of 4
Fun spooky books (bring one and trade!):
- The Witches of Eastwick by John Updike
- Coven by Steven William Rimmer

Note: this cache is starting off pretty full of stuff, so you probably won't be able to leave anything big in it. And remember to take something. Come on, you know you love Pez! And those fangs - grrr!

Please remember to log your visit in the log book.

The state park is open sunrise to sunset, and charges admission Memorial Day through Labor Day on weekends and holidays.
