Out of the Ashes: Ode to Nature in BalanceThe only problem finding this cache is driving to it. It's a tad bit out of the way to the average Central Oregon traveler. Enjoy the view!! Mourn the devastation...
Our first memory of geocaching involves wandering around the area north of the original Nature in Balance with DrNOitall in the fading light, desperate to find our first cache. We failed, but we enjoyed ourselves immensely and we logged our failure. In the weeks to follow we went NUTS on caching.... We've been caching ever since... We found Nature in Balance a few weeks later and that was the first time we truly appreciated the area... Not long after we found it the raging Eyerly Fire tore through leaving little hope for its survival. We've been waiting to check it out ever since. Today we found the charred remnants of the original cache contents, and we realized we had to plant a cache here... At least until Logscaler decides to come back and do it right.
We found the original cache mixed into the ash and sandy yellow soil in a place that did not nearly resemble its predecessor... It was sad, but we could sense the underlying essence of rebirth in the area, and felt lucky to witness it. The container itself, and the log it was hidden in, were completely vaporized. But there in the
charred moonscape of ashen trees and squirrels we found a few items distinctly familiar to the cache contents we had found months before. To think that they survived this inferno when so many trees, snags, shrubs, and stumps were unable to was rather astounding. This cache is our effort to temporarily revitalize Nature in Balance and pay our respect.
The cache is a small spray-painted green altoids-type container hidden near one of the few surviving organisms you will find. It's pretty well hidden because it's right in the heart of the high traffic area. Please trade only stickers or flat items, as the cache is VERY thin.
