To start the ball rolling I have chosen the following statue:
Born on Cockspur Island in 1868, Florence Martus became known to Savannahians and boatmen around the world as "The Waving Girl."
Beginning at age 19, in 1887, Florence consistently waved at all vessels: liners, tramp, tankers, and in fact all craft entering or leaving the port of Savannah until moving in 1931. At first, it attracted only passing interest but as it was so consistent that for 44 years she never missed greeting a single incoming or departing vessel, she became known throughout the world. By day she would wave a handkerchief and by night a lantern.
Although many stories say she was looking for a lost love, she always denied the romantic notions. Over the years, she received many honors for her service and was the subject of international articles. To commemorate her years of service, the Altrusa Club erected a statue in her honor. Her faithful dog is standing beside her.
