All I can say is WOW. This is, hands-down, my best geocaching experience to date. Climbing to the peak of Half Dome has long been on my "bucket list" and it was great to finally get up here and do it. I'm logging this two days later and my body still feels like I've been in a wreck, but it was totally worthwhile. Up at 3 AM, in the car and leaving Groveland at 4 AM, parked at 5 AM, and on the trail at 5:20 AM. We hit the summit at 11:00 and were back at our car at 5 PM. Whew! The hike is every bit as challenging as the guide books and websites say it is; it's definitely doable in a day, but it's tough (I found downhill to be the worst part--especially on the countless steps). The wife is not much a fan of heights, so she waited back at Sub-dome while I gloved up, grabbed the cables, and started heading upward, quite certain that I was going to fall to my death at any moment. Well, when I made it up to the top, I found myself wondering how the heck was I going to make it back down, since 1) I would have to actually LOOK down to see where I was going, and 2) my downward momentum would be more than a slight disadvantage should I lose my grip on the cables! I put those fears aside and relaxed for awhile at the top of the dome, snapped a few photos, and of course swung by the coordinates for this virtual. I just now noticed that the display on my GPS was obscured, but took a really bad self-portrait at the post as well and I have plenty of other shots at the top to prove I was there. Now, once that was through, I had to figure out the best way to get back down the cables. One person told me it was best to hold both cables and face down, someone else told me to hold both cables and face uphill, and a third person told me it was best to hold one cable with both hands. I tried all three and found the last to be the best way down...and it made dodging the increasingly heavy uphill traffic a bit easier. Surprisingly, I wasn't nearly as terrified heading back down as I first expected I would be; I even summoned up the courage to scamper down on the outside section of the cables for a bit. After climbing back down to the very bottom of Sub-dome and looking back up, I was amazed at how crazy the climb still looked. Part of me still can't believe I didn't wimp out. Considering how much traffic Half Dome gets, it amazes me that this cache only has 153 finds after nearly eight years. This one is totally worth the trip. Of course, I would have come up here even without a cache, and I certainly look forward to my next trip up the cables, but it's nice to add a geo-smiley to the mix as well. Thanks so much for being part of this fantastic experience!

Made it to the top of Half Dome @ 3:30am (first time up there). Rested and hung out until sunrise and then grabbed the cache and headed down the cables. TFTC

It's all about starting early. With a 4am wakeup we left the backcountry parking lot at 5:10 and was on top by 10:45 for snacks, lunch and lots of pictures. Half Dome was the major reason for coming to Yosemite this year. Thanks.

Not that I needed another reason to get to the top of Half Dome, but this makes the trek a little more interesting.
